14/05/2018:  Kildysart Ladies U16 Claim “C” Cup

The Kildysart Ladies had a resounding victory over Doonbeg in the U16 championship to claim the Division C Cup, Kildysart 6-5 to Doonbeg 2-8.  There was nervousness in the Kildysart camp heading into the final as they suffered their only loss of the campaign to the undefeated Doonbeg but they were determined to come out on top this time.   The match was played in in bright sunshine in Cooraclare on Monday last with Michael Talty taking charge of the affair.

Kyla Foley started off the scoring offensive for Kildysart with a point in the 4th minute and this was quickly followed by a goal from Emily Leahy which the ‘keeper was powerless to stop.  Sinead Kelly, who likes to attack from her centre halfback position, added a point in the 16th minute.  The full-back line of Aoife McMahon, Niamh Moloney and Aoife Cleary were on high alert and were closing down any Doonbeg advances.  Together with the wing backs Sarah Casey and Caitlin Casey they limited the Magpies to just 2 points coming from Amy Linnane and Ailish Dunne in the first half.  Amy Murphy, who along with Foley makes up the dynamic mid-field pairing, added a point before Leahy added the final score of the half.  Halftime score: Kildysart 1-4, Doonbeg 0-2.

There was no room for complacency as Kildysart saw Doonbeg overturn a similar lead earlier in the year.  The Blues got the dream start with a three-goal blitz by Grace Sheerer, Emma Garry and Roisin Donnellan coming in the first three minutes of the restart.  This however inspired a Doonbeg purple patch where they mounted an unanswered 2-3 in a ten-minute spell to bring the score to Kildysart 4-4, Doonbeg 2-5 with 15 minutes remaining.  Lauren Conway and Ailish Dunne would both strike the net for Doonbeg as well as adding three points between them. The north Clare raid would have been greater only for the quick hands of Kildysart goalkeeper Emma Byrne.  Kildysart’s next goal came after Caiti Donnellan won the ball in midfield and passed to Leah O’Donnell who offloaded to Sheerer to find the net.  Doonbeg’s fate was sealed when Sheerer completed her hat trick 2 minutes later thanks to great pressure on the kick outs from Alaina Casey and Rachel O’Sullivan to keep the ball in Doonbeg’s half.  As Foley started off the scoring for Kildysart, so did she end it, with a long-range point in the 51st minute.  Doonbeg never lowered the heads and fought back with the last three scores of the match coming from Abbi Shanahan, Conway and Linnane.  Final score: Kildysart 6-5, Doonbeg 2-8.
