23/08/2015:  They say “Goals win matches” but today that maxim was turned on its head by the Kildysart Minors who are headed to the Division C Final by sheer determination and perseverance.  They were deserved winners today when they overcame Doonbeg 12 points to 2-4.

It was an exciting match from the off as Kildysart went for goal in the opening minute when a free dropped short.  The goal attempt was blocked by Doonbeg but was collected by Aaron Slobody who slotted it over the bar to get Kildysart on the board.  Seamus Casey doubled the advantage with his point in the 4th minute.  Kildysart were under pressure and the combination of Doonbeg wides and a goal save by Aidan O’Loughlin kept Kildysart in the lead.  Kildysart were stunned when Doonbeg broke through and found the net in the 9th minute to go ahead 2 points to 1 goal.  Two more points from Seamus Casey put the Blues back in front as they headed into the 2nd quarter.  A point from Luke McGrath extended the lead, only to see Doonbeg raid the net again.  The Magpies had 2 attempts blocked on the line but the third rebound managed to break the defence giving Doonbeg the advantage 5 points to 2 goals.  Kildysart responded by making positional switches to reinforce the defence and this had an immediate impact.  Rory McMahon was winning most of the ball in mid field and the team moved the ball with precision and swiftness all over the pitch.  Aaron Slobody got the leveller in the 18th minute and Kieran O’Brien’s point put Kildysart back in front where they stayed for the remainder of the match.  David Cusack’s fisted point just before the break had Kildysart in front 8 points to 2 goals.

Aidan O’Loughlin was called upon again at the restart and didn’t disappoint. Points from Luke McGrath and Rory McMahon extended the lead to 4 points.  However the boys from Doonbeg weren’t going down without a fight and reduced the margin to the minimum with 12 minutes remaining.  The last ten minutes were very intense with both teams giving it their all.  Seamus Casey’s point with 6 minutes to go gave Kildysart a 2 point lead.  Doonbeg kept coming and were trying for another goal but had to settle for just a point – Kildysart 0-11, Doonbeg 2-4 with 4 minutes left.   Seamus Casey again gave the Blues an insurance point but still Doonbeg kept coming and the 3 minutes left seemed like a lifetime.  A determined Kildysart kept the ball in Doonbeg’s half for the remaining minutes and came away the victors: Kildysart 12 points, Doonbeg 2-4.  Best for Kildysart: Rory McMahon, Seamus Casey, Kieran O’Brien and Mikey Donnellan.
